Rachel Botsman, co-author of “What’s Mine Is Yours: The Rise of Collaborative Consumption,” has a great TED Sydney presentation on how social media and the “frictionless” aspects online community building are changing the behavior of consumers. From item swap sites to car sharing companies like ZipCar, consumers are warming to a more fluid concept of ownership — and in some cases, foregoing ownership entirely, opting instead for access to products and services. Of course, there’s a strong eco-friendly undercurrent in that these collaborative markets extend the lifecycle of products and reduce waste.
