FacilityBlog over at Today’s Facility Manager has some great quotes from Jakob Carnemark, an SVP with construction giant Skanska USA. In essence, he says that in order to keep pace with exploding data center demand, it’s time to break from the past and adopt agile, energy saving and cost effective strategies for getting IT facilities up and running.
“Data center supply chains – like all supply chains – are collapsing around efficiency and speed to market,” said Carnemark, who leads Skanska’s Mission Critical Center of Excellence. “To take advantage, companies need to alter their approaches and move away from the traditional design-bid-build process. It doesn’t make sense to build dynamic computing platforms on top of traditional high-cost, inefficient infrastructure. New solutions can optimize IT and asset utilization by capturing a broad spectrum of information about data center facilities and how they are being used.”
What does he recommend? Based on his own experience, things like modular data center designs and free-cooling (chillerless cooling systems) have helped his company meet the needs of its client. And some energy monitoring and management technology, and you’ve got a recipe for a cutting-edge, green data center.
